What is xBlock Porn Blocker?

Using the restricted settings on iOS devices, parents can add the app and password protect the device so that children are unable to remove or disable the xBlock app. xBlock uses keyword searching to ensure that the sites users are browsing do not contain explicit or pornographic content.

xBlock works in tandem with the Safari browser, so all other browsers should be removed and/or disabled; once parents or partners remove or restrict browsers, they should activate the device restrictions with a passcode that only they know, thus preventing the device user from accessing inappropriate content by alternate means.

It’s important to note that a common user complaint is that the xBlock app is an overzealous site blocker, often blocking sites that contain medical terminology or technical guides. Using a keyword search, the xBlock app is far from perfect, and will restrict a lot of sites that are, indeed, devoid of any explicit content.

Many users have suggested integrating a whitelist into the app, however, the developer has stated that adding this function could potentially allow users to trick the app -- and their parents or partners -- which would negate the usefulness of xBlock. Instead, the developer gives users the option of submitting sites or site links to him via email, which he will then screen and fix in the app, should it have been blocked by accident.

The opposite also rings true, should a user or parent discover an inappropriate site or content that accidentally makes it through the xBlock app, they can submit that information to customer support to be reviewed and added to a blacklist, if need be. Not necessarily the most efficient of methods, but one that likely gives parents an additional peace of mind.

It’s important to note that after purchasing the xBlock app for $7.99, users are not subject to additional in-app purchases or subscription fees. Users should also note that installing the xBlock app on each of their iOS devices will require an additional app purchase (unless synced, such as a single iPad and iPhone).

Is xBlock Porn Blocker safe for my kids?

Because the xBlock app does not work on the root device, just the Safari browser app, parents or controlling partners must enable restricted mode on the device the app is meant to be used upon. It is rated for users of all ages and is safe for kids.

If restrictions aren’t set to specifically block users from accessing or downloading other browsers, they can easily bypass the xBlock app by downloading or using an alternate browser, which will not be screened by the app.

Parents should be aware that xBlocker also blocks pornographic or explicit images, so there is no need to worry about children stumbling upon inappropriate images on sites such as Tumblr, Flickr, Pinterest or Reddit.

Parents should be aware that xBlock does offer an opt-out option for data collection, ensuring that no information from a user’s browser will be collected and stored; the link to opt-out can be found in the Disclaimer section of the developer’s website.
