What is Walmart - Shopping & Grocery?

The Walmart app offers streamlined services for customers shopping both online and in-store. However, the Walmart app is not just for shopping, customers can use the app for everything from prescription services to money transfers. The Walmart app is free to download and use, but does feature advertisements throughout.

Once the Walmart app is downloaded, users are prompted to give the app permission to access the mobile device’s camera, which is used to scan barcodes and QR codes, as well as requesting permission to send notifications.

It’s important to note that some Walmart app users have complained about excessive notifications being sent at all hours of the day, so customers may wish to bypass allowing notifications to be sent.

Lastly, the Walmart app requests access to location services so that it can locate nearby stores and services.

The Walmart app offers several menu options on the bottom of the screen; users may choose to shop directly in the app, reorder items they’ve purchased either in-store or online, view their online shopping cart, access  their account information, or proceed to a menu of services.

The bulk of the Walmart app, apart from shopping, can be found under the Services option. In Services, users can choose from a range of menu options: Savings Catcher, Walmart Pay, Barcode Scanner, Store Finder, Pharmacy, Money Services, Lists, Registry, Weekly Ads and Walmart Credit Card.

Savings Catcher allows customers to submit their receipts and receive a credit with the difference should a competitor offer the same item at a lower price. According to users, Savings Catcher is great when it works but it often doesn’t.

Walmart Pay boasts the ability for users to keep their payment information, securely stored in their account, easily accessible for quick checkouts. Users simply access the Walmart Pay service in the Walmart app, scan the QR code on the payment PIN pad at checkout with their mobile device’s camera and they are sent an electronic receipt for their purchase.

The Walmart app also streamlines pharmacy and prescription services, allowing customers to “order, transfer and track prescriptions and refills.”

Money Services allows customers to easily send and receive funds, allowing them to skip the line and scan the PIN pad QR code.  The information is already loaded into the system from the user’s app, so they simply scan the QR code and then receive an electronic receipt and reference number for the transaction.

The ability to check or create online registries, create shopping lists, check weekly ads and save one’s Walmart credit card are also available through the Walmart app.

Is Walmart - Shopping & Grocery safe for my kids?

Parents should know that the Walmart app is primarily a shopping app but includes a bevy of additional services.

Customers using the app are entitled to free, two-day shipping (with a $35 minimum on eligible purchases), and can also use the app to check if specific items are available at their local Walmart store.

Customers are also able to see the aisle location for specific items through the app, making their shopping trip a breeze.

Although the content of this app is safe for kids, the services available are likely better suited for adults.

That being said, the ability to use Walmart Pay allows users to pay with gift cards loaded into an account, and is also great for parents having their teen run into the store for them.

Apart from that, having the ability to easily access one’s bank account, debit or credit card can be risky for teens. Parents should be sure to discuss spending expectations prior to allowing their children to use the Walmart app.
