What is Vudu - Rent, Buy or Watch Movies with No Fee!?

The Vudu app is a one-stop video streaming service for all things movies and TV. It's similar to Redbox and Amazon Video, in that Vudu offers digital purchases on-demand.

Users have the ability to keep a digital movie catalog within the app, as well as explore new movies to add to their collection. Limited to users 18 years or older, Vudu operates by a pay to play model, but users can occasionally find free movies to watch within the app.

While Vudu does offer “Movies On Us” which includes titles that users can watch for free, parents should know that free movie selections feature ads. When users are browsing through titles on the site, they’ll see a “Free With Ads” banner across those movies that are available at no charge.

Free movies are heavily laden with ads, which stream for a minute-and-a-half before users even begin watching, but those looking for an easy or free movie streaming experience likely won’t be bothered with ad play.

It’s worth noting that Vudu doesn’t offer new movies for free streaming, but they usually have a decent selection of older titles to watch for free.

Vudu is not available for subscription, instead, users pay for each movie or television show they stream on a per title or episode basis. Users will have already entered payment information when registering, and purchases and rentals are charged to the account on record.

Television shows typically cost $1.99-$2.99 per episode, while movie rentals cost anywhere between $.99 and $5.99 (Vudu often offers $.99 specials). Users may also purchase digital editions of movies, which range in cost from $4.99 to $24.99.

It’s important to note that users who’ve purchased a Blu-Ray or DVD with UltraViolet, can enter their digital code to access it via Vudu.

Vudu users have the option of streaming titles on demand, or downloading for later viewing. Another convenient use for Vudu is for digitizing movie collections and having them stored in a central, easily accessible location. Users can easily access their movie collections through their smart TVs, game system, streaming media device or mobile devices.

Is Vudu - Rent, Buy or Watch Movies with No Fee! safe for my kids?

Parents need to know that Vudu is a free app for movie enthusiasts, and while the app is rated 12+ in the App Store, terms of service state that users must be 18 years or older to create an account.

After downloading the Vudu app, users will be prompted to register with an email address, Facebook or Walmart.com account. Once users log into their Vudu account, they are able to enter a preferred title into the search bar, or browse through 20 genre categories.

Vudu does offer a kids and family section, called the “Kids Zone,” comparable to similar services, but does not offer any type of parent lock or way to keep children from streaming adult titles on a shared device.

Any type of content screening must be done by parents. Logging out of the Vudu app after use can help keep children from making purchases or watching adult content when a parent isn’t there to supervise.

All-in-all, the Vudu app makes it easy for families to access their movie library, wherever they are, or stream something new. Parents will likely want to keep the password to themselves so that they can monitor and approve the content being streamed and purchased through the Vudu app.

Because there is no content filtering available, it is safe for kids with parental supervision.
