What is OfferUp - Buy. Sell. Letgo.?

OfferUp is an ecommerce app, providing users with the ability to buy or list and sell their items both locally and nationally. Like an online yard sale, OfferUp provides an easily searchable alternative to sites such as Craigslist and eBay. Free to download and use, OfferUp is rated for users ages four years and older.

Touting itself as the “largest mobile marketplace,” OfferUp is a location-based yard sale site, similar to Craigslist, where users can quickly and easily list items to sell, or search available items.

When users first download and open the app, OfferUp prompts users to denote where they’re searching for items either by using their mobile device’s location data or by entering in a zip code. The fact that users can change the area in which they look (or sell) is an excellent feature, allowing the app to adapt to different lifestyles.

OfferUp allows users to register accounts via three different methods: using their Facebook login credentials, Google account or simply inputting their email address.

After creating an account, users can choose to fill out as much, or as little, information as they feel comfortable, viewable by other users on the OfferUp app platform.

An extremely beneficial feature is the ability for users to verify their accounts through TruYou, which uses both a phone number and official identification to get the verified badge added to a user profile. Having a verified badge signals to other users that a user is who they say they are and are less likely to be a scammer.

Selling items on OfferUp is simple with a mobile device as users simply take a photo of the item they wish to list and list the parameters, including asking price, for the item.

Those users wishing to shop through OfferUp may do a simple search via their home feed, which automatically shows all items listed in the user’s area or they may set filters to further refine their search. OfferUp allows users to perform a simple keyword search but also allows them to set filters to create a more exact search.

Users may set search filters to a specific location or a set distance radius to search and in addition add their preferred minimum and maximum prices.

After setting filters users can then sort the results by price, newest listings, or those listings located closest to them.

Is OfferUp - Buy. Sell. Letgo. safe for my kids?

Parents allowing their children to use the OfferUp app should only allow them to conduct transactions with those profiles with verified information.

While OfferUp offers an intuitive local buying and selling platform, parents should know that their children have the ability to connect and communicate with strangers through the app.

Browsing items for sale, a user can tap on a particular item and then message back and forth with the buyer to negotiate price and set up a time and place to meet.

Using apps and services like OfferUp is not only risky for minors, adults can often find themselves in bad situations through these online yard sale sites.

Users should always meet in a public place, preferably with someone accompanying them and should always notify a friend or family member of meetup arrangements.

For these reasons, OfferUp is not a safe app for children and should only be used with adult supervision.
