What is Google Play Music?

The Google Play Music streaming app allows users to listen to individual songs from a catalog of millions in addition to curated playlists, channels, and personalized recommendations.

Google Play Music is rated for users ages 12 years and older, is free to download, but does feature in-app purchases and advertisements. This app is available for iOS and Android devices.

Google Play is a music streaming app that allows users to play from their music library, sample new artists, as well as listen to channels based upon artists they already like.

A thumbs-up and down rating system allows users to rate the music they’re being served, allowing the app to personalize further the music it plays.

Google Play Music offers two options: Free and Unlimited. The Free version of the app is robust and can provide quality music streaming without a subscription cost as long as users don’t mind listening to periodic advertisements.

Using the free version of Google Play Music allows users to stream millions of ad-supported tracks, listen to curated music channels, receive recommendations based upon listening preferences, store up to 50,000 audio files and skip up to six songs per hour in their stream.

Google Play Music’s Unlimited option offers the benefits of the free version, in addition to the ability to download music files for offline play, skip an unlimited number of songs while streaming and listen to music ad-free for a $9.99 per month subscription cost.

Is Google Play Music safe for my kids?

Parents should know that Google Play Music offers a Family Plan, which allows access for up to six family members for $14.99 per month. With the Family Plan, families can stream different music on separate devices at the same time, use the Google Play Music app on up to 10 devices each, and share purchased music via the Google Family Library.

However, to have a Family Plan, each family member must have their own Google account, and Google’s terms of service state that users must be 13 years of age and older to open an account.

So, while the app is rated for users 12+, technically users must be 13+ to use the app with an account. It’s also important to note that the Family Library only allows families to share media, it does not filter out content and explicit lyrics as each user streams music through their accounts.

Regarding parental controls, it’s important to note that Google Play Music does not contain any option for screening content. While parents can manage what their child purchases in the Google Play store (explicit lyrics, adult content, etc.), they are unable to control what their child streams in the Play Music app.

This may prove to be a problem for families, and other music streaming services may be a better option, both price-wise and for parental control offerings.

Because this app does not provide any parental controls in regards to explicit lyrics, parents may want to consider whether or not this app is appropriate for their teen.  This app can be safe for teens.
