What is Five Nights at Freddy's?

Five Nights at Freddy's is a series of popular survival horror gaming apps that challenges players to make it through a series of night shifts at a haunted Pizzeria. The shop is overrun with haunted, homicidal animatronics which players must placate through various means in order to survive the night.

Be warned, the horror in this game is psychological in nature, with sometimes unbearable tension and sudden jump scares.

Five Nights at Freddy's was originally created by game developer Scott Cawthon, following the negative reception of his previous project. Like most of his previous work, Chipper and Sons Lumber Company was a family-friendly title, but some reviewers found it unintentionally frightening. Cawthorn set out to make a deliberately scary title and most definitely succeeded.

Five Nights at Freddy's uses very simple elements to build tension to almost unbearable levels, without fancy graphics or gore. In the first game, very few elements of the game are even animated, which only serves to increase a player's stress – did that animatronic move when the player wasn't looking, or are the imagining things?

There are five games in the Five Nights at Freddy's series, with more properties in development including a movie and massively multiplayer online game.

Is Five Nights at Freddy's safe for my kids?

While incredibly popular with younger audiences, Five Nights at Freddy's is not appropriate for all children. If your child is prone to nightmares or easily frightened, Five Nights at Freddy's is not for them.

Five Nights at Freddy's is an impressive piece of work, using very subtle emotional cues to create an overwhelming feeling of paranoia and ultimate powerlessness with little more than a batter indicator and some discrete sound effects. The horror is all in your mind – which is why this game is unsuitable for most young children.
