What is Vimeo?

Vimeo is a video streaming and sharing app that allows artists, advertisers and other creatives share their work with a broader audience.

The Vimeo app is rated for users ages 17 years and older, and is free to download, but offers additional in-app purchases in the form of subscription plans.  The Vimeo app is available in both the App Store and the Google Play Store.

Vimeo is a high-quality video streaming service for more refined video creators and viewers. For those who only want to use the app to find and watch interesting videos, they can do so for free.

Also included with the free option is 5GB of data uploaded per week, privacy options and statistics on views. Paid plans include Plus, Pro, Business, and Premium, each with a monthly subscription fee ranging in cost from $12 to $75 per month.

Because of the quality of video hosted on Vimeo and the price of the subscription plans, the platform tends to skew towards a more mature crowd. However, the platform can be a great place for budding artists to showcase their work and surf the work of others for inspiration as the platform is rife with high-quality video shorts and movies.

Touted as the first HD video streaming platform, the Vimeo app is known for its high-quality video streaming, but many users say it comes at a cost. Not only are the subscription plans pricey, but many users also complain about the lack of functionality the Vimeo app possesses and say that glitches and uploading errors are frequent.

However, the quality of video and the subscription plan prices also help create a high-quality user base that doesn’t typically troll video comment sections and lambast creators. While Vimeo has a much smaller community than the behemoth that is YouTube, that small community tends to offer constructive feedback for creators.

Is Vimeo safe for my kids?

While the downside is that there is no way for parents to screen content if they allow their children to use the app. This means that children can easily stumble upon clips laced with profanity, mentions of drug, alcohol, and tobacco use, as well as occasional nudity and violence. Pornography is not allowed on the site, but some videos do contain nudity.

Users have several privacy options available to them on Vimeo. Depending on the level of subscription, users have a range of privacy options to choose from with the Vimeo app such as password-protecting videos, which is great for businesses who use the platform to share work with clients.

From who can view user videos to video embedding permissions, users can tailor the app to fit their comfort level. Parents of creators can also work with their children to customize their public or private streaming options.

Maximum privacy options are available with the two most expensive subscription plans, Business ($50/month) and PRO ($75/month).  That being said, Basic (free) and Plus ($12/month) both provide typically adequate privacy options.

Overall, Vimeo is likely a safer platform for kids to access video, as the uploads tend to be of a higher caliber, but it’s best for parents of younger children to monitor their use of the platform, due to the lack of filtering options.
