What is Rarevision VHS - Retro 80s Cam?

VHS Camcorder is a video app that creates retro, 1980s-quality videos on your mobile device.

VHS Camcorder is rated for users of all ages and costs $3.99 in the App Store and $2.99 to download in the Google Play store for Android users. VHS Camcorder does not feature any additional in-app purchases or advertisements.

VHS Camcorder is the perfect app for every 80s and 90s fan who loves to reminisce about the good old days by creating videos that look and feel just like old home videos taken on a Camcorder. As with all fashions and designs, what’s old becomes new and hip again, and the VHS Camcorder is no exception.

Released in 2015, the VHS Camcorder app was a labor of love for app developer and seasoned Hollywood post-production and after effects creator, Thomas Worth. In an interview with Worth, Wired shared that the poor-quality, retro-style Camcorder effect was easy to create with professional video editing software, but the real challenge was building an app that would make the technology accessible for smartphone users.

Months and months of research and trial and error produced the hugely popular VHS Camcorder app for iPhone, squiggly lines, skipping frames, digital timestamp and all. The VHS Camcorder app skyrocketed in popularity just two days after its release when Wiz Khalifa posted a video of his arrest at LAX, recorded through the retro app.

The result came in the form of massive numbers of downloads and repeated requests for an Android version of the VHS Camcorder app.

Based upon the original JVC GR-C1, which was the first Camcorder featuring a built-in VHS tape deck, everything about VHS Camcorder is intuitive and straightforward to use. While the technology was groundbreaking in 1984, the controls are simplistic in today’s tech world, which Wood recreates in the VHS Camcorder app with its menu options.

What users get with the VHS Camcorder app is a video, recorded in 4:3 aspect ratio, with washed-out colors, visual noise (snow) at the bottom of the picture, and poor, muted sound quality with realistic videotape hiss.

VHS Camcorder’s resulting videos are delightfully retro, and even allow users to spoof the date; it should be noted that the furthest back users can set the date on the app is March of 1984, as that is when the JVC GR-C1 Camcorder was released.

Is Rarevision VHS - Retro 80s Cam safe for my kids?

Parents will likely find it humorous that their children would find it cool to purposely record poor-quality videos, but they’ll probably find it pretty cool themselves.

Just like the Instagram filter that produced poor-quality, bluffy Polaroid-type photos, the VHS Camcorder app replicates the effect and puts it in a package that even non-techies can operate.

It’s important to note, however, that the VHS Camcorder app is not a filter, instead it’s more like a gaming app than photo editor in that it’s a simulator that layers effects in a sophisticated manner. However, the VHS Camcorder app does offer filters that can be applied to the finished product.

This app is safe for kids.
