What is Tile?

Tile is a free app, used in-tandem with products of the same name that helps users track down lost or misplaced items. The Tile app is available for both iOS and Android devices and features in-app purchases. Tile is rated for users of all ages.

The Tile app works in-tandem with Tile Mate, Tile Slim or the Tile Original, which are square, Bluetooth enabled tracking devices.

The concept is simple: users simply attach the Tile device to items they commonly misplace or do not wish to lose, such as a handbag, wallet, mobile phone, or keys. A virtual lost-and-found device, the catch is that Tiles will only work if in Bluetooth range but there is a workaround.

While it sounds iffy, possibly even sketchy, the crowdsourcing aspect of Tile is pretty neat. If a user has lost an item tagged with a Tile but is out of range, they can use their Tile app to set “Notify When Found,” which puts every device running the Tile app on lookout for lost items. In this sense, users definitely want Tile to become a household name.

Tile is quick to point out however, that the information being transmitted is private.  No one knows about a lost item except the user, the system is simply placed on lookout through other devices.

Neat options such as “Notify When Found” are not available for those simply using the free Tile app. Users must pay for a Premium, or subscription-based Tile app account to have access to the additional features.

According to the developer:

“Tile Premium, which includes features that enhanced the finding experience like Smart Alerts, Location History and Unlimited Sharing, is available with a monthly or annual subscription ($2.99/month or $29.99/year).”

Is Tile safe for my kids?

This app is not safe for kids due to the crowdsourcing feature and is more helpful for adults.  Some parents may opt to utilize Tile with their families or to help a particularly forgetful child, possibly even pairing with a first time smartphone user.

The other possibility with Tile is for parents to use the app for location tracking with their child.

The downside to all of this is that the Tiles parents wish to track or find must be in the Bluetooth range of their device or they must be a Premium subscriber.

Another common complaint to the Tile App is that the app must be running at all times to provide location tracking and last known locations for Tile items.

Having the Tile app running at all times drains batteries at a much faster rate, with some users reporting losing 25 percent of their usual daily battery power.

One last user complaint deals with Tile battery life, which is a one-year time frame. Users should consider the fact that their devices have a one-year life when deciding to invest in the Tile system.
