What is Sushi Monster?

Sushi Monster is a math app created by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, that helps children practice, reinforce and expand math fluency.

The Sushi Monster app is free to play and is a fun and engaging way to get kids to practice, and perhaps even like, mathematics. This app is only available for iOS devices. This app is rated for users 4 years and older but the math is this app is better suited for ages 9 to 11 years old.

Players use plates of sushi with assigned number values, to either add or multiply to equal the sum total listed on the board hanging from the monster’s neck. Points are awarded for each correct answer, and stars are awarded for gameplay at the end of each round.

Structured into twelve sequential levels of increasing difficulty, Sushi Monster challenges children’s math strategy and reasoning skills by keeping them thinking on their toes.

Sushi Monster is comprised of seven addition levels, five multiplication levels, with each level consisting of four rounds of 14 target numbers. Players have the option of replaying each round with new numbers, to help them master a skill level.

In Sushi Monster, players are faced with a monster, set behind sushi counters. Hung around the monster’s neck is a placard with a number, which is the sum total players need to achieve.

Players tap and slide numbered sushi plates to the monster to either add or multiply to equal the monster’s placard number. When players get the total correct, they receive 1000 points. Incorrect answers result in a monster meltdown in which it throws out the plates it’s handed.

Players have the option of skipping one of the 14 target numbers in a round, to revisit later in that round.

Is Sushi Monster safe for my kids?

Parents should be aware that Sushi Monster is a free app, available only for iOS devices, geared towards children ages nine to eleven years of age.

Sushi Monster meets common core standards, so parents can feel confident allowing their children to download and play this fast-paced math game, this app is safe for kids.

Those kids struggling with math fluency will have fun getting in additional practice with the Sushi Monster app.

Much like the timed memorization drills of olden days, Sushi Monster rounds keep a tally of the total time each round takes a player, making it fun for players to return to those rounds to try to achieve a faster time.

The time a player takes to complete a round does not however, affect the score. If timing rounds proves to be too stressful or distracting, players may opt to turn off the timer in the settings. Both audio and music can also be turned off for gameplay.

In all, Sushi Monster is a great, free math practice app, that even struggling students will enjoy. What’s not to like about a sushi-eating math monster?
