What is Reflex Student?
Formerly known as Reflex Math, the Reflex Student app helps students in grades 2-8 with a basic mathematical foundation practice concepts for math fluency.
It’s important to note that Reflex Student is only available for iPads and while advertised for free, requires a $35 annual subscription to use. Reflex Student is rated for users ages four years and older and does not feature any additional in-app advertisements or purchases.
Reflex Student is used by many school districts and homeschoolers to aid students in developing math fluency. Students should have a foundation in mathematical concepts before using the Reflex Student app as it’s not meant to teach concepts but instead, it’s intended to provide fun exercises to enhance mathematical skills in concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
In a sense, the Reflex Student app is a digital and more interactive way for students to practice and memorize mathematical concepts than the paper flashcards of old.
When students first log in, they meet a character named Crabby, who guides them through the game. The first thing Crabby will instruct students to do is to create an avatar for the game which is customizable with options such as girl or boy, skin color, face, clothes, and accessories.
Once students create their avatar, they’re able to proceed to the games. Games in Reflex Student are opened as students complete levels and subsequently level up through the practice exercises.
As the name suggests, Reflex Student games are fast-paced and meant to help students memorize basic multiplication sums through repetition and quick-fire rounds of equations.
Reflex Student rewards players with points/stars for successful gameplay. Once a player has amassed some coins they can head over to the store and purchase additional customizable options for their avatar.
The Reflex Student store is arranged like a department store with different areas and levels. Players can choose to sit in the stylist’s chair and have their hairstyle and color changed in addition to their eyes.
Additional store categories include Accessories and Clothes, each of which allows players to change the look of their avatar as they go through the game.
Is Reflex Student safe for my kids?
Each game begins with an option for students to read instructions which explain what players are to do, how they are to do it, and the goal of the specific game they’re playing.
Progression through games is achieved through players solving mathematical problems with correct answers moving the player forward and through any obstacles the game may possess.
Some games are quick-fire games and require players to enter responses to equations before time runs out or their character is knocked off the screen.
In short, Reflex Student is a safe for kids app that challenges students to think on their toes in a fun, easy to use gaming format.
Parents will appreciate the ability to stay on top of their child’s progress through the reporting feature of Reflex Student.
Parents also do not need to adjust difficulty levels in the Reflex Student app like other similar apps on the market, as the program monitors student progress throughout the platform and adjusts accordingly.
