What is Messages - Messenger for SMS?

Messenger for SMS includes many of the features users are familiar with in messaging platforms, such as emojis, GIFs, animated emoji art, SMS themes, font and messaging bubble options, in addition to a variety of wallpaper options.

This app's permissions policy is not ideal for those wishing to keep their information, texting, and even phone activity to themselves. Here is just a sampling of the information the Messenger for SMS app collects, in order to “provide an enhanced user experience,” “better services,” and “product improvement”:

  • Read web bookmarks and history
  • Find accounts on device
  • Read/modify accounts on device
  • Read calendar events plus confidential information
  • Add or modify calendar events and send emails to guests without owners' knowledge
  • Precise location (GPS and network-based)
  • Read the contents of your USB storage
  • Modify or delete the contents of your USB storage

While the Messenger for SMS app is free, users are encouraged to purchase the pro version, which boasts an ad-free interface, and ad placements go beyond a simple annoyance to actually interfering with users’ devices.

When users download the free Messenger for SMS app, they also download what the developer calls a Smart Tool, which enables ads to play outside of the app. Some users have complained about being served ads on their device’s home screen, outside of the messaging app.

Another common user complaint with the Messenger for SMS app, apart from the general bugs that make sending a receiving texts inconsistent, is an influx of “unsent MMS messages” warnings. Despite users having no messages in queue, this problem can reportedly stop the app from allowing users to send any messages.

Is Messages - Messenger for SMS safe for my kids?

Parents should know that Messenger for SMS features a Private Box, which acts like a vault app for messaging. Messenger for SMS will hide the Private Box icon, in which messages are encrypted and locked via password. This app is rated for teens and is not safe for kids.

A scary feature for parents of children using the Messenger for SMS app, the Private Box feature can be used for inappropriate conversations, even sexting, without parents being aware that the messaging is taking place. The fact that Messenger for SMS allows for photos, videos, audio files and links in the Private Box messaging makes this a parent’s worst nightmare.

One feature parents will appreciate is the ability to activate Driving Mode, so no message notifications will be received when in a moving vehicle. Users can opt to activate an Auto Responder while Messenger for SMS is in Driving Mode, letting those messaging the user’s device know that they are driving and will respond at a later time.
