Medium is a news and journalism app that allows authors to post opinion pieces and browse through the works of others depending on which subject they are specifically interested in.
This app is available in both the App Store and the Google Play Store and features in-app purchases in order to access certain features. Medium is rated for users 12 years of age and older.
Once you have downloaded the app, you will be prompted to make an account that will include some of your personal information and interests.
After this is completed, you can begin scrolling through your homepage and browsing through articles that are specifically tailored to the subjects that you previously selected.
To begin writing a piece on Medium, simply click on the middle button that resembles a sheet of paper at the bottom of the app. This will allow you to instantly type and share your thoughts with the Medium community.
If you find yourself loving another person’s article, there are several ways that you can interact with their work. The app now allows users to highlight passages they find to be particularly interesting, and you can even write your own commentary about the piece by scrolling to the bottom of the page.
The app is incredibly popular amongst users and generally receives very high reviews.
Is Medium safe for my kids?
Due to its mature content and the ability for users to interact with each other, Medium should only be used by mature teens with parental supervision.
However, there is currently no age verification process in place to create an account.
Parents should know that while Medium does have strict regulations against certain topics, such as hate speech, harassment, and excessively graphic or violent content, mature themes are still allowed in articles, including drugs, sex, crude humor, and horror.
Many of these subjects are not appropriate for children and should be treated as such.
Additionally, Medium allows users to interact with one another, thus creating the potential for individuals to come into contact with Internet predators.
Users are able to leave comments and reviews for articles, as well as send direct private messages to authors. While these messages are supposed to be related to what the author has written, there is no restriction put in place to ensure that conversations remain related to this topic.
It should be noted that while the app does not track users’ locations, it does have access to personal data, such as one’s contacts, photos, and files. Some parents may not be okay with an app-developer having this much access to the personal details of their child.
Finally, some parents may not be comfortable with the fact that Medium allows users to make in-app purchases. If this is the case, simply prevent your child from using the app altogether.
