Twitter is a social networking app that allows users to create and share short messages, called "Tweets." Tweets that consist of 280 characters or less, and which can also contain photos and videos.
Users can follow friends, celebrities, and brands to interact and read their tweets, which are displayed in a chronological feed. Users can like Tweets, reply, or Retweet content from public profiles.
Users can also tag anyone with a twitter account in their tweets, or mark their tweet with one or more hashtags to mark it for users with similar interests.
Twitter is also a breaking news platform, where users share events and information in real time. It has also been used to coordinate protests, share important information, and recently helped to popularize the #MeToo movement.
Is Twitter safe for my kids?
Twitter is safe for mature teens who can be trusted to use the platform safely.
Twitter has no enforced filtering system when it comes to tweets and photos, so teens can stumble upon mature content while scrolling through feeds. Users can also follow links that will take them off the platform and onto a different website.
The app does feature privacy settings. Users can set their account to Private so their tweets can only be seen by their friends and approved followers. Twitter also includes a direct messaging feature, so parents may choose to keep an eye on their kid's messages.
