What is Mathway: Math Problem Solver?
Mathway is an educational app that allows users to submit math problems and receive instant answers in order to check their homework, complete practice problems, and prepare for exams.
It can be downloaded for free from both the App Store and the Google Play Store but offers in-app purchases to access additional features, such as step-by-step instructions on how to complete the problems. This app is rated for users of all ages.
Once the app is downloaded, users must select which specific subject they need help with, ranging all the way from trigonometry to chemistry. After selecting the subject they will be working with, they can either manually type the math problem that they would like to solve, or submit a photo of it to the app.
With a full mathematical keyboard, the app makes it possible to submit any type of problem, no matter how complex it may be.
Users receive the answer to the problem within seconds and can make an in-app purchase to receive specific instructions on how the app arrived at that answer.
Additionally, students can pay extra to work with an individual tutor if they find that they are still struggling.
Although the app receives very high ratings, some users have expressed that they do not like how you have to make an in-app purchase to receive access to the step-by-step instructions.
Is Mathway: Math Problem Solver safe for my kids?
Due to its educational nature, simplicity, and lack of interactive features, Mathway is safe for kids aged 10 and older.
Because of this, there is no age verification process in place to either download or use the app.
Parents should know that while the app does not contain any mature content, it does require a strong foundation in math.
Typing problems by hand can be difficult for individuals that do not have experience with switching between keyboards, and this can prove to be frustrating for some, particularly younger children.
Unless you decide to make an in-app purchase that allows your child to receive step-by-step instructions, the app only provides users with the answer.
If you are worried that your child may simply copy down the correct answer in place of learning the actual math, this app may not be for you.
Additionally, it should be noted that Mathway does allow in-app purchases, something that parents may not be comfortable with their child having access to.
If you would like to prevent your child from making unwanted transactions, simply disable in-app purchases in their phone’s settings.
Finally, while the app does not require large amounts of personal information, it does receive access to users’ camera, photos, and phone storage.
Some parents may not be comfortable with an app developer having this much personal information regarding their child. If this is the case, simply prevent your child from using the app altogether.
