What is Look?

The Look app is a free messaging app, formerly known as Sochat, that combines text messaging with live video streaming. Look is free to use, offers unlimited messaging and chat groups, and is rated for users ages 12 years and older.

Users allow the app to “periodically access your contact list and/or address book on your mobile device to find and keep track of mobile phone numbers of other users of the Service.” Therefore, users give their “express consent to us to access your contact list and/or address book for mobile phone numbers in order to provide and use the Service.”

Additionally, should a user’s content be marked as public, they are granting access for their content to be used however the app developers wish. Per the terms of use, “By posting Content marked as Public, such as your first name and avatar photo, to the Service, you grant us the right and license to use, modify, publicly perform, publicly display, reproduce, and distribute such Content on and through the Service.”

Is Look safe for my kids?

Look is a video messaging app that should be on parents’ radars because any messaging activity done within the app cannot be accessed in a child’s phone log. While teens may not be using this app to be sneaky, parents should be aware that it provides plenty of opportunity for strangers to interact with their children, and vice versa. Therefore, it is not safe for kids to use.

As with any live video streaming app, the ability to monitor and filter content isn't possible and the app uses the honor system for content on the platform. Parents should be aware that users share (and use) the Look app at their own risk.

It’s also important to note that users sign away any rights to their content, once uploaded to the platform and the app has the extensive permissions, which are listed in the app’s terms of service.

The Look app may access a user’s contact list, which could lead to spam text invites to the platform to all contacts on that list. Additionally, parents allowing their teens to use the Look app should be cautious about content settings, as uploaded content may be set to be accessed by the general public and viewed by strangers.

The app also includes deals with third party sites, which the app developer states may often be linked within the Look app. While third party sites may be linked, Look app developers are not responsible for any content or damages that result from visiting that site, and recommend that users read the terms of use and privacy policies of any third party sites that a user may visit.
