What is imo-International Calls & Chat?

The Imo mobile app offers free chat, video, and voice calling.

The Imo app is available for both iOS and Android devices and is rated for everyone. This app does feature in-app purchases and advertisements.

Users can send unlimited messages and make free audio and video calls across all devices. Like most other apps in its class, imo offers group chat features such as photo and video sharing, stickers, and end-to-end encryption of all communication.

Imo sticks to the basics, however, with a simple and clean interface for users who just want to easily communicate  for free.

Like many other video calling and chat apps on the market, Imo offers users the ability to place free video and voice calls, with a WiFi or 2-4G connection. Added functions and features include the ability to send unlimited messages, group chats, animated sticker embellishments, and photo and video sharing capabilities. Those users who wish to upgrade to upgrade their Imo app to a paid account will receive 25Gb of cloud storage, in addition to an ad-free interface.

After downloading and opening the Imo app, users are required to input their mobile phone number, to have a verification code sent via SMS. Once users input their verification code, they’re prompted to input their full name and age to create their account. It’s important to note that the Imo app requests access to a user’s contact list, and uses this information to connect a user with contacts already using the app, in addition to sending text invite links to friends.

Perhaps the most concerning thing about the Imo app, and definitely one parents should take note of, is the privacy policy. Parents should pay close attention to the section, under the Imo app’s terms of use, that is clearly labeled, “Our rights to use Your Content.” It reads:

We may use Your Content in a variety of different ways as permitted by our Privacy Policy, including publicly displaying it, reformatting it, incorporating it into reports, collections, marketing materials and other works, creating derivative works, summaries, or aggregations from it, promoting it, distributing it, and allowing others to do the same in connection with their own websites and media platforms. As such, you grant us (imo, its parent, subsidiaries, and affiliates) the non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free, fully sublicensable (through multiple tiers), transferable right to use Your Content for any purpose (including, without limitation, the rights to use, reproduce, publicly perform or display, distribute, adapt, publish, modify, translate, incorporate into other works in any form, media, or technology, and create derivative works of Your Content, in whole or in part, throughout the world in any media). Finally, you irrevocably waive, and cause to be waived, against imo and its users any claims and assertions of moral rights or attributes with respect to Your Content.

In short, user content, posted to or on the app, becomes the property of the Imo app, in addition to any of their subsidiaries. That the app can choose to use the image of a minor for whatever marketing purposes they choose is concerning, and parents should know that their children, simply by using the Imo app, are waiving their rights to their own content.

Is imo-International Calls & Chat safe for my kids?

In order to use Imo, users are asked to confirm they are over the age of thirteen before using this app. Because this app is used for video calling and can be used for sexting or other bad behavior, it is only safe for teens with adult supervision.

Parents should know that the Imo app is a video calling app that was the precursor to more popular video and voice calling apps, such as Skype and WhatsApp. Imo requires users to be at least 13 years of age or older to use the video chat app, and is free to download and use. Imo does feature advertisements throughout the app, but ads can be removed through any in-app purchase option, ranging in price from $.99 to $4.99.

Users can only chat with contacts in their address book, or users that they personally send an invite to contact them. There are no search or discovery features to enable random connections with strangers. There aren't any unmoderated public channels.

Imo does automatically collect some information about its users, including the make and model of their communications device, content visited via the app, and aggregate demographic information. Some of this information is used to improve the app, while some may be shared with third parties.

One of the more recent updates to the Imo app is one that should alleviate some parental concerns, as it takes care of a potential security issue. Until recently, the Imo app did not offer end-to-end encryption, leaving the door wide open for chats and calls to be intercepted by a would-be hacker. The addition of encryption definitely makes this free video chat app much more appealing.

Parents will appreciate the fact that imo does not have in-app purchases or require in-app currency to operate core features.

The imo app does feature in-app advertisements for third-party sites, however, and this content can sometimes reference mature themes like alcohol, gambling, or sexualized marketing images.

While the Imo app does provide high-quality video and voice calling for free, parents should consider whether the free app is worth their child’s image being used for marketing purposes.
