What is Game Dev Story?
Game Dev Story is a progressive gaming app that challenges players to create a gaming company and develop a hit game.
Game Dev Story is available for purchase through both the App Store ($4.99) and Google Play ($2.49). Rated for players of all ages, Game Dev Story will appeal to gamers from beginner levels to even the most experienced.
With bit graphics, cheesy background music, and throwback fonts, Game Dev Story will appeal to players of all ages and skill levels. It is however, helpful for young players to be of reading age as text boxes direct players through the game.
Game Dev Story is much like the Tycoon series of games where players are given a concept and are tasked with building it from the ground up. Players can see how decisions they make impact the success of their company (and eventual earnings).
Game Dev Story begins with players creating their company name and following simple instructions from the “secretary” via text boxes. Players are not left out in the dark as the secretary informs them that they can consult a game manual if they have any additional questions (users access this by tapping “System” on the game menu and then selecting “Manual”).
Once begun, players are first tasked with hiring employees for their burgeoning business. Players will start to go in the red as they invest in their business, beginning with how they plan to advertise that they’re hiring.
Once employees have been hired, they launch directly into designing their game concept and players are given a multitude of options to begin drafting their proposal.
Game options include Platform (PC, Console, etc.), Genre (Table, Adventure, Racing, Trivia, Puzzle, Educational, etc.), Type (Pirate, Animal, Robot, Historical, Ninja, etc.) and Direction (Normal, Speed, Quality, Research, Budget).
Players also have the option to adjust the speed of the game, with more impatient players selecting the fastest level to see a quicker rate of returns.
Players also can fine-tune the details of their game options in Game Dev Story. For example, under Direction of the game, players can then choose the following options, at differentiated levels: Cuteness, Realism, Approachability, Niche Appeal, Simplicity, Innovation, Game World, Polish.
Is Game Dev Story safe for my kids?
The level of detail Game Dev Story allows players to fine tune likely indicates that the app is better suited towards older players.
Much like the game of Monopoly, Game Dev Story is an app that will continue as players move forward with making decisions for their company.
There will, undoubtedly, be times when a player’s company fails but the fun is in seeing how to dig out of the hole, what decisions make a positive impact, and how quickly a player can turn things around.
For future entrepreneurs, Game Dev Story is a fun way to illustrate all of the details and decisions involved in running a successful or unsuccessful company.
