What is Fire Up!?
Fire Up! is a scrolling screen gaming app that’s simple to play and highly addictive. Players play round after round, trying to beat their previous high score, progressing through levels and increasing their player stats.
Fire Up! is free to download and play, features in-app purchases and advertisements, and is rated for users four years of age and older.
A static banner ad remains prominently at the bottom of the screen, while 30-second video ads are played after each round, sometimes back to back. Users can pay $2.99 to remove ads from the app via in-app purchase which is essentially purchasing the app.
Fire Up! features a scrolling screen with blocks stretched across the screen, as well as one at the bottom, which serves as the player’s “cannon.”
Players’ blocks continually “shoot” white balls at the line of blocks stretched above them, with the goal of breaking through. Players navigate their firing block by swiping left and right across the screen, shooting the blocks as they advance down the screen.
Each of the blocks stretch across the screen are assigned numbers which indicate the number of shots it will take to destroy it and clear a hole for the player’s block to fit through and proceed.
Strategically, it pays to target blocks with lower numbers, as players will be able to clear those blocks faster but the space between rows of blocks shortens and the number of shots required to destroy the blocks increases making Fire Up! increasingly challenging.
Those players who opt not to pay to remove ads should prepare to spend a lot of time watching video ads many of which are interactive and require tapping or swiping of some sort.
Sure, Fire Up! is a pretty benign time-killer, but the emphasis on ads isn’t worth playing the app for free nor is the $2.99 cost for ad removal worth the value of the game.
Is Fire Up! safe for my kids?
Fire Up! is a fun, safe for kids scrolling screen game in a loosely similar vein as Tetris.
Ad placement is heavy in Fire Up!, so much so that it often seems that the game is more about watching ads than it is about playing the game.
In fact it’s pertinent to note that our reviewer after only playing a handful of rounds, was unable to progress any further unless they downloaded one of the apps in the ads.
There was no option to close out the ad screen and Fire Up! would not resume without proceeding with the download.
Sure, Fire Up! is fun to play, and quickly losing rounds draws players back in for “just one more game” to try to beat their previous round, but the reality is that they’re spending more time watching video ads than they are playing the actual game.
