What is Dubsmash - Create & Watch Videos?

Dubsmash is an app that allows users to create video recordings of them lip-syncing to sounds from pop-culture. Once the video is recorded, users can add special edits, such as stickers and text, and download the video in order to share it with friends.

This app is rated for users 12 years of age and older and can be found in both the App Store and the Google Play Store. This app contains no in-app purchases or advertisements.

In addition to creating videos, users can also watch the videos of other members in the Dubsmash community. If a user wishes to make their own video available to others, they can submit it and see if it will be approved for the app’s “Community Moments”.

After downloading the app, users are prompted to create a new account or sign-in through a pre-existing Facebook account. Once logged in, the app requests access to your phone’s contacts in order to find your friends on Dubsmash, and asks if it can send you push notifications.

Users are able to upload a profile picture, add friends by username, and share their profile link through other forms of social media, such as Facebook and WhatsApp.

To create a video, press the circle above “Create” that is located at the bottom of the app. From there, you can either search for specific sounds, or browse through popular choices. Once you have selected your sound, you can begin filming.

Although the app mainly receives positive reviews, users have complained that the new version prevents members from being able to save their videos directly within the app, rather than just to their phone’s camera roll.

Is Dubsmash - Create & Watch Videos safe for my kids?

Although iTunes rates Dubsmash as being acceptable for ages 12 and up, you must be 14 years old to make an account with the app. If users between the ages of 12-14 wish to use the app, sharing an account with a parent is a potential compromise.

Due to occasional mature themes, Dubsmash is recommended for teens.

Parents should know that while the app does not contain explicitly inappropriate material, some sound excerpts do have suggestive themes, potential crude humor, and references to drugs and drinking.

Additionally, users are able to record whatever they wish during their videos, even if this content is not appropriate.

It is important to note that while Dubsmash does allow users to create video content, it is not a live-streaming service, such as Airtime or YouNow.

Although Dubsmash does not contain a chat room or forum feature, users are able to submit their videos in order to potentially share them with the entire Dubsmash community.

Parents may not feel comfortable with strangers watching videos of their child and being able to see their username.

If parents wish to limit the amount of personal information that their child shares with the app, there are several options.

For example, when making a new account, it is not obligatory to give your first or last name. Additionally, when choosing a username, it is possible to select something that does not contain any personal details.

Finally, members can go into the account settings and turn off location tracking.
