What is Dr. Seuss's ABC - Read & Learn?

Dr Seuss is synonymous with learning to read, so it makes sense that they’ve created an app that aligns with his ABC book.

The Dr Seuss' ABC Adventures app is for younger children working on learning letters, letter cases, and early sight words. Children can read along with highlighted narration, or read the book independently.

This app is available in both the App Store for $1.99 and the Google Play Store for $3.99.  It is rated for users of all ages and does not feature any further in-app purchases or advertisements.

The book on which Dr Seuss' ABC Adventures has helped literally generations of children learn basic phonics and literacy. Sharing this interactive app with your child is both educational and a heartwarming, nostalgic pleasure.

Dr Seuss' ABC Adventures hides a number of playful surprises throughout the book, with fun animations to hidden learning activities on each page. Kids can read the book independently, listen to an audio narration, or read along with highlighted text to improve sight word acquisition.

The learning activities hidden throughout Dr Seuss' ABC Adventures were developed in consultation with early literacy experts and targeted at the academic needs of early readers. The skills covered in this app were selected to support US Kindergarten-level English Language Arts standards.

Parents can observe their children's performance in a special “Parents' Section”, which track time spent reading and total pages read.

The  Dr Seuss' ABC Adventures app is a recipient of multiple awards for educational apps, including:

  • Gold Award Winner (Parents' Choice)
  • Best New Apps (Apple)
  • "Smart Choice Media" Award (Academic's Choice)

The developers, Oceanhouse Media, Inc., have created and published over four hundred educational apps for children, in partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises, HarperCollins, Hay House Publishers, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Mercer Mayer, The Smithsonian Institution, Chicken Soup for the Soul, and Chronicle Books.

Oceanhouse Media was founded by Michel Kripalani. Kripalani was formerly CEO of Presto Studios, which created The Journeyman Project series and Myst III: Exile.

Is Dr. Seuss's ABC - Read & Learn safe for my kids?

Dr Seuss' ABC Adventures is safe for children, with educational content created in cooperation with experts in child development and early literacy. It is geared toward children of preschool age and younger, however, so kindergartners may find this app too "babyish" for them.

Children in this age group should be limited to one hour of screen-based entertainment per day, including television and electronic games, according to the American Society of Pediatrics. Further, they advice that children eighteen months of age and younger should avoid screen-based entertainment altogether.

The American Society of Pediatrics' recommendation exempts certain classes of learning activities, however. Whether or not Dr Seuss' ABC Adventures should count against a child's ration of one hour per day is unclear.
