What is Tapas – Comics and Novels?

Tapas is a digital reading app that allows users to consume comics and novels in bite-sized segments (hence the app name). Tapas is free to download in both the App Store and the Google Play Store.  It is rated for users 17 and older.

Based upon freemium and pay-to-play gaming models, the Tapas app allows users to sample portions, chapters or episodes, of comic and novel content (approximately five minutes worth) for free, and then charges users to unlock additional content or purchase a book in its entirety.

Users are served between 10 to 20 percent of a cartoon series, story or novel, which should take approximately five minutes to sample and are then asked to “unlock” additional chapters or purchase the electronic book outright.

Much like sampling an ebook on Amazon, users have enough of a text sample to decide whether or not they wish to continue. Book prices on the app are based upon the books’ current market values. When purchased by segments or chapters, users spend anywhere from $.08 to $.50 to unlock each episode or chapter.

It’s definitely an interesting way to consume books and comics, but paying per chapter can likely become a nuisance.

Creators and authors are paid based upon ad revenue, tips from readers (using the app’s coin currency) and chapter or segment purchases.

Many novels on the Tapas app are previously published but the app also integrates original content to the platform, helping up-and-coming writers and artists have an outlet for their work, as well as to build a loyal following.

The app also boasts a partnership with Silicon Valley literary agency, Fuse Literary, helping cull quality content for the platform.

Is Tapas – Comics and Novels safe for my kids?

Parents should know that Tapas is a digital reading app, requiring users to be seventeen years of age or older to download and use the app.

As the app is geared towards adults, there are no content filters in place, so parents should be cautioned to monitor their child’s use of the Tapas app, should they allow them to use it.

Based upon gaming app models, Tapas serves cartoons, novels and stories to readers in bite-sized segments that are typically around five minutes in length.

The developers created the segments to be consumed similar to a round of game play, in which a round of say, Candy Crush, takes approximately five minutes to complete.

And just like gaming apps, using a freemium or pay-to-play model, the sampling is just enough to decide whether or not a user wishes to pay for the ability to proceed. In this sense, sampling both entices readers to spend and alleviates a lot of buyer remorse.

As Tapas is a mobile device app, it’s meant to be used by people on-the-go, either riding the subway into work or standing in line at the store while running errands.

This app is safe for older teens with parental supervision.
