What is Die With Me?
Die With Me is a chat app that pairs participants who have less than 5% remaining on their smartphone battery. Meant for a niche group of users, Die With Me only allows users into the chatroom when their battery is on its last legs.
Die With Me is rated for users of all ages, costs $0.99 to download and use, and does feature additional in-app purchases. Die With Me does not feature any in-app advertisements.
For those that routinely let their smartphone battery die, Die With Me is an app that will pair users to chat with like-minded people.
In itself, Die With Me is a sign of the times, or perhaps a sign of phone addiction, in that it’s meant to provide entertainment until the last drop of power is gone from user phones.
Die With Me features a basic platform that works similar to a text conversation, where users leave single lines of text and those coming and going can scroll through to see who’s been there.
After downloading, users must wait until their phone battery hits the 5% threshold to gain access to the chat wall. Once in, users enter in a nickname to use on the chatroom wall and have approximately four minutes to post, read, and respond before their own battery gives up the ghost.
Is Die With Me safe for my kids?
However, parents should note that anytime random chats are involved, children are at risk.
While there is no stated age for use, parents should be aware that the anonymous aspect of the app means the chat walls are cluttered with profanity, obscenities, and often racist epithets.
This app is not recommended for children.
A quick look at user reviews shows that, while Die With Me users have the option of selecting a language, users across the world seem to be on the same server.
Because of the global server, Die With Me users often have to scroll through posts in a myriad of languages other than their own, wasting valuable time while their phone battery is on its last legs.
There are quite a few comments from users complaining about trolling and spam clogging the chatroom wall.
And while some users commend the app, saying that knowing their time in the chatroom is limited forces them to connect with others much faster, others find having to sort through users from across the globe a distraction and waste of time.
Whatever the Die With Me app says about our society, the developers see it as a digital experiment. Indeed, co-creator, Dries Depoorter, is a digital artists, so experimentation is at the forefront of what he does.
However, one must ask oneself how much of the Die With Me app is about marketing the co-creators, whose personal websites are both listed prominently under the app description.
