What is Bitmoji?
Bitmoji is an app that allows users to create and share their own personalized emoji/avatar. Bitmoji is available for both Android and iOS users, is free to download but does include some in-app purchases.
When the app is downloaded, Android users can access it via their chat app and iOS users can access it via the keyboard and begin creating a cartoon version of themselves, customizing everything from face shape to hairstyle.
Once users create their Bitmoji they can use it in a variety of applications: WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, iMessage, and Google. Those who use their Bitmoji on Snapchat are rewarded with a friendmoji (the ability to create a 2-person avatar).
When users open the app, they are able to create an avatar in two different styles: Bitmoji style and Bitstrips style. Many users prefer creating their avatar in the Bitstrips style as the likeness is a bit more detailed and true-to-life, versus the Bitmoji style which is a more generic and less detailed likeness.
Users are given a variety of options to customize their personal avatar including hairstyle, hair color, eye color, size and shape, eyebrows, nose shape, facial shape, mouth shape, etc.
Once the face is created, users can then further customize their Bitmoji with their fashion style or aesthetic, even dressing their avatar in seasonally appropriate clothing.
Once users have finished creating their personal avatar it’s fitted into a preset selection of expressive Bitmojis, easily accessible through their keyboard, ready to insert into text messages, emails, and on social media platforms.
Snapchat acquired Bitstrips so users can now link their Bitmoji account to use their avatars directly within the social media platform.
In Snapchat, users simply navigate to the “stickers” and then access their Bitmoji keyboard to search for the right Bitmoji to insert into their photos.
Is Bitmoji safe for my kids?
Bitmoji is a great option for minors to upload their likeness on social media platforms, in lieu of a photo of themselves, something many parents will appreciate and is rated for users 12 years of age and older.
Parents should know that Bitmoji requests access to the device keyboard, but the company states that they do not gather any additional information from users’ phones.
The Bitmoji app does feature in-app purchases to further customize emoji avatars so parents should discuss app spending prior to their child’s use. Bitmoji’s in-app purchases are $0.99 each
The Bitmoji app is a relatively harmless way for teens to express themselves but parents should be aware that some of the options may be mature for younger children.
Bitmoji includes pop-culture references in their options so users can insert their Bitmoji into popular memes or sayings, which may be adult in nature. For example, featuring a Bitmoji with alcohol or tobacco products.
Overall this app is safe for teens.
