What is Daily Connect (Child Care)?

The Beholder app is the mobile version of a popular PC and console game that pits citizens against one another in a totalitarian state. Tasked by the government to surveil an apartment complex’s tenants, players collect and review evidence to flush out any traitors in the Big Brother simulation of Beholder.

Rated for players ages 12 and older, Beholder is $2.99 to download and features additional in-app purchases.  This app can be found in both the App Store and the Google Play Store.

Perfect for those who wish to simulate life in a communist state, Beholder tasks players with spying on fellow citizens. Players assume the identity of Carl, a State-installed apartment building superintendent whose covert mission is to spy on the tenants and report back to the State.

Carl has assumed the position of the previous superintendent after the State took them for “Unkown Reasons.” Thus, players have a shadow over their head throughout the game knowing that they, too, may be seized by the State, never to be heard from again.

Players have to tend to the needs of the apartment building and its tenants, in the form of maintenance and various other requests, as well as surveiling the tenants and reporting any suspicious or illegal activity.

The sophisticated part of the Beholder app is that every character within the game is fully developed. Each character has a past that effects both their present and their future.

Playing as Carl, players can change the game outcome with every choice they make, which causes a ripple effect. Players can choose to be empathetic towards the tenants or report with an iron fist, but either way, those decisions will predict the path of the Beholder game they’re playing.

However, players who are too empathetic towards the plight of their tenants can find themselves and their family being punished by the State.

Parents should be aware that while the game graphics are cartoon in nature, graphic violence is depicted within.

For example, once Carl reports a neighbor for an infraction, a Public Servant is shown going into that tenant’s apartment and subsequently beating them with a club and kicking them while they’re on the floor.

Beholder may also include crude humor, mature themes and depictions of alcohol, tobacco or drug use.

The Beholder app is perfect for role-playing/spy enthusiasts who wish to play wherever they are, and it provides an option for those existing players desiring the opportunity to play on the go.

Those looking for a more cerebral gaming experience will appreciate the nuances of Beholder, as well as employing different strategies to see all possible outcomes.

While not precisely inappropriate for children, the Beholder app contains some material and themes that make this app better suited to older, more experienced gamers.
