What is WeChat?

WeChat is everything social, in just one app. WeChat makes it easy to connect with loved ones all over the world via messages, group chats, voice and video calls. WeChat supports 20 languages and can translate messages into any language.

To use WeChat, users must first create an account using their phone number and can connect their phone's contacts to find people they already know on the app. Users can create a WeChat ID and receive a QR code to make connection on the app easy.

With WeChat, users can make group chats with up to 500 people and video calls with up to 9 people. This makes it easy for users to connect with large groups of people. Users can share stickers, play games with friends within their messages, and send each other money. Calls within the app are free, but calls to landlines and mobile phones are paid and only available in some areas.

Users can connect with people and search for friends using friend radar, people nearby and shake. Shake is a feature that randomly connects any two users who choose to use the feature. There is a search feature for Moments, Articles, and official accounts. Moments are a personal photo stream that is shared with your contacts. Users can also share their location with friends.

Is WeChat safe for my kids?

WeChat is safe for mature teens. Searching for people nearby and the "shake" feature are not safe for kids to use. Shake connects any two users randomly, and any time kids are connected to strangers it is cause for concern.

Parents should ensure that their child's location services are disabled before using this app, as they do not want their minor advertising where he or she is at any given time. Additionally, if users choose to keep their location services on, anyone will be able to find and view your Moments, a personal photo stream.

Since not everything on WeChat is free, parents may want to consider turning off in-app purchases on this app to avoid unwanted or accidental charges.

With the right privacy settings and some parental supervision, WeChat can be safe for mature teens to use. This app is not meant for kids.
