What is WeChat?
WeChat is an app-based call and messaging service, that allows users to transmit information over WiFi, rather than using their cellular network data.
WeChat is free to download and use, is rated for users 12 years of age and older, but does feature in-app purchases. This app is available for both iOS and Android devices.
WeChat is a multimedia communication text and chat app that lets users connect with others across the globe. WeChat offers a range of features and can be used in multiple ways.
Users can opt to use the app for messaging, sending video, voice, text and photo messages to single users or in group texts/chats. Users can create group chats with up to 500 people. WeChat also offers group video calls, allowing up to 9 users to participate in a call at one time.
It’s important to note that the WeChat app does offer free video and voice calling, but users wishing to connect with other users on a landline or in another country must purchase phone credits to use.
Phone credit packages range in price from $0.99 to $9.99. However, a quick look at user reviews shows a handful of customers who have had paid credits disappear from their account or an inability to use the app due to locking, login issues or crashing, making their paid credit useless.
Is WeChat safe for my kids?
WeChat is not safe for kids and it appropriate for mature teens with parental supervision.
Parents may want to keep an eye out for this app, especially with the “Friend Radar” feature. Friend Radar is a WeChat feature where users can use the app to connect them with other users in the area, via “People Nearby”, or shake their device to be served a randomized connection.
Parents should be aware that children can easily connect with strange adults through the app. Additionally, the real-time location sharing feature can be unsafe for kids.
The language translation feature will translate messages sent through the platform into a user’s native language, helpful for those adults connecting and communicating with another user from a different country.
While the WeChat app has similar features to many other messaging apps, it's not recommended for kids to use.
