In this app, users are given four characters to choose from: a boy, a girl, a bull, or a cat. Children then get to cook for their character using a selection of 12 ingredients. The app’s focus on play allows children to experiment with different ingredients and cooking appliances, getting feedback from the game’s characters about which foods they prefer.
Parents can walk their children through the game at first to give them a better understanding of how to play or let their child’s imagination run wild and see what happens when hay is microwaved! Many reviews of the app praise its encouragement of creativity and its focus on reasoning, however some parents note that their children were quickly bored of Toca Kitchen and no longer wanted to use the app. One parent said that the game expanded the palate of their picky eater.
Toca Boca, the app’s developer, boasts a long list of apps similar to Toca Kitchen which feature different life-like situations where your child is in control, like Toca Kitchen Monsters or Toca Life Pets.
Toca Kitchen is recommended for children ages 4 and up due to its learning and reasoning components. The app download costs $3.99 and there are no in-app purchases.
