What is The Very Hungry Caterpillar?

The Very Hungry Caterpillar & Friends - Play and Explore app is a fun, educational app for children ages five years and younger.

3D pop-up graphics, paired with delightful animation, create an eye-popping and engaging platform for kids to play and learn alongside their favorite Eric Carle characters. The Very Hungry Caterpillar & Friends - Play and Explore app is available, in both the App Store and Google Play, for a one-time purchase of $4.99 and does not feature any in-app purchases or advertisements

Each “scene” begins with an educational overview of the animal, what it eats, its life cycle, etc., in the form of a 3D book which opens to text with illustrations.  A narrator reads the text so it’s easy for little ones to follow along.

Once the educational text has been read, the scene then opens to a game for children to play. For example, for The Very Hungry Caterpillar, children learn that caterpillars begin life as an egg and once hatched, they eat continuously in order to grow. The caterpillar then spins itself into a silk cocoon and emerges as a butterfly.

At the end of the scene, the narrator introduces the game, telling children that they will win the “healthy eater” badge by navigating their caterpillar so that it can eat fruits while avoiding sweets.

The game is simplistic, with children just tapping fruits as they appear on the scrolling screen to navigate the caterpillar to those fruits.  If a sweet treat is tapped the narrator tells children that “too many sweet treats give the caterpillar a stomachache.”

To earn a Quiz Whiz badge, children listen to a text that provides educational information and details about animals. Afterwards, they are served questions with details about the animals that appear in the animated scene, such as a physical detail/trait or a color, and answer by tapping the animal on the screen.

After answering five questions correctly, children are awarded with a Quiz Whiz badge.
