What is Smart Baby Shapes: Learning games for toddler kids?
Smart Baby Shapes is an educational app designed to acquaint toddlers with colors, shapes, and sizes through tactile puzzle games.
Toddlers ages two years and older tap and swipe shapes in one of the four games offered in the app. Smart Baby Shapes is available for iOS devices for $2.99. Smart Baby Shapes does not feature any additional in-app advertisements or purchases.
Touted as a learning game for toddlers, the Smart Baby Shapes app states that it is meant to be used by children ages two years of age and older, so the “baby” portion of the name is a little deceiving.
The Smart Baby Shapes app describes itself as:
“an outstanding bright game, which will acquaint your kid with the primary colors, shapes, and sizes quickly and clearly while playing. The app teaches to distinguish shapes, sizes, and colors, as well as to pronounce studied terms correctly."
When first opening the app, users will see three main menu options for games as well as control buttons to turn the narrator and music on or off when playing. The game options are large, so it's perfect for little ones to practice navigating by tapping and selecting the games they wish to play.
At the very bottom of the screen is a box that keeps tally of players’ best score, which is likely unnecessary for such a young age.
Smart Baby Shapes functions as a virtual shape sorter, presenting shape and color puzzles for toddlers to tap and drag to make matches. Featuring four games, each with levels of difficulty that progress along with gameplay, the Smart Baby Shapes app teaches toddlers shape, color and size recognition through a combination of visual matching and audible pronunciation.
In all, the Smart Baby Shapes app features 40 levels of puzzles for toddlers to complete.
In more manageable levels, toddlers are presented with a colored screen with a floating shape and a color-coded cutout in which the shaped piece fits. Toddlers drag the shape over to the cutout and a match is made, a voice then states the color and shape, “red triangle.”
As young players progress, they’re given an increasing number of shapes and colors to match, upwards of 5 shape and color matches at the highest levels. Understandably, the screen gets busy with so many shapes floating around cutouts, testing toddlers’ cognitive abilities and fine motor skills.
Is Smart Baby Shapes: Learning games for toddler kids safe for my kids?
The simple concepts Smart Baby Shapes works with are easily taught at home with most toys for children that age, especially with a parent playing with them.
In fact, research shows that toddlers are unable to synthesize the information gleaned from television shows and tablet games as quickly when they’re left to consume media on their own. However, those toddlers whose parents are with them, describing what is happening, can perform better and achieve a higher level of learning from educational activities involving televisions, tablets or smartphones.
In summary, Smart Baby Shapes is definitely safe for kids to play, but whether it’s worth the $2.99 price tag is up for debate.
