What is Remind: School Communication?

Remind is a classroom communication app that helps keeps students connected and aware of upcoming deadlines, assignments, tests, and more. The app is available for free in the iTunes App Store and the Google Play Store. Remind is rated for everyone.

Remind is designed to facilitate classroom communication in the smartphone era. The platform functions like most group communication apps, providing a space for group messages to the whole class, smaller groups, or individual messages to and conversations with one other person.

Teachers can send out reminders to the entire class, share handouts, share photos, or provide other files to ensure assignments are finished, permission slips are turned in, and that the classroom continues to function well.

Parents can view the teacher’s communications so they can make sure their kid is on task and prepared for the school day. Students can use the platform to form group messages for team projects or text other students in class for help with homework and test prep.

More than 27 million students, parents, and teachers use Remind in the US, and, judging by the reviews, most all of them love it. The app receives an average rating of 4.8 out of 5, with reviewers, both parents and students, praising the ability to stay connected with teachers and reminded of classroom events and deadlines when school is out.

Is Remind: School Communication safe for my kids?

The essential function of Remind, as a platform to facilitate communication between teachers, students, and parents, is safe for kids, and in almost every case, helpful for kids.

There is a low likelihood that kids would abuse a school platform instead of some other messaging program, but there is still the possibility of cyberbullying and other inappropriate use of Remind.

This is the nature of messaging apps, and it is important that parents are aware that students may have the opportunity to message each other, a feature which could be abused. The app does take preventative measures such as making all messages permanent and allowing users to report bullying.

Remind is also iKeepSafe certified, which means the app is certified by the Internet Keep Safe Coalition as one that meets all regulations for handling personal information.

Cyberbullying is very unlikely to occur on Remind, but it is a place where messages and photos can be shared, so the discussion of these potential problems is important.

While concerns are few, the benefits of the app are many. Parents enjoy staying connected to classroom activities and assignments, teachers enjoy a smoother classroom environment, and students are reminded of important dates and have the ability to communicate outside the classroom.
