What is NYT VR – Virtual Reality?

The NYT VR - Virtual Reality Stories from the NYTimes app is a news app that utilizes VR headsets to put users right in the stories they read every day.

This app can be downloaded in both the App Store and the Google Play Store. The NYT VR app is rated for users 10 years of age and older. This app features in-app advertisements.

Users should know that this app is not updated with current news stories, however, this app features 360 exclusively curated VR experience videos for Google Cardboard.

Users are taken through a three slides of a tutorial where they are given quick info about the app. While this app was made to be used with the Google Cardboard VR set, users not using VR can still enjoy this app by selecting the 360 mode on any video.

With a very simple interface, users can either scroll through the list of videos, with no search bar or categories available, to select a series or video.

There is also a circle button in the upper right hand corner that gives users access to notifications and support. Viewers will be able to opt in to notifications on any new videos as the New York Times is working to add them each month

Is NYT VR – Virtual Reality safe for my kids?

The NYT VR - Virtual Reality Stories from the NYTimes app can be safe for mature teens with parental supervision.

While many of these sorts of stories are easily available on the TV at any time of day, the news stories featured in this app may be too mature for kids and younger teens. Parents should be able to gauge whether or not their child is ready for this app.

This app touches on topics that may be sensitive to some such as atomic bombing, fighting in the Middle East, war, immigration, and much more. All of these topics will be highly informative, but parents may want to limit which ones their child has access too.

In addition to that, if a user chooses to use a VR headset, parents should know the guidelines for children’s suggested use. Most VR headsets warn users that they should not be used by children under the age of 13.  Because children under this age are still developing, too much use of VR headsets can affect their vision.

Parents should also be aware that too much use can result in strained eyesight, dizziness, nausea and even clumsiness and should also monitor the usage of VR headsets and limit use to 30 minute increments with breaks in between.
