What is Moodnotes - Mood Tracker?

Developed by two clinical psychologists, Moodnotes is a mental health app used to log, chart, and explore moods, thoughts, and feelings.

Moodnotes is rated for users 12 years of age and older, and costs $4.99 to download in the App Store for iOS devices only. Moodnotes does not feature any additional in-app purchases or advertisements.

A mental health app based upon the principles of cognitive behavior therapy, Moodnotes is a joint venture between Thriveport and ustwo. Thriveport is the company behind the highly successful Mood Kit app, named one of the best apps for depression by HealthLine in 2017.

The Moodnotes app works by sending a notification each day at the same time, users determine the best time for reflection in their schedule, prompting users to check in and share how they are feeling that particular day.

Users start by assigning a face icon and can then enter notes with more detail about their thoughts and the emotions they’re experiencing. If a user responds with a negative mood, the Moodnotes app prompts them to explore those thoughts and feelings further.

While Moodnotes helps users take time to reflect upon their mood each day, and provides a way for users to chart their moods over time, where Moodnotes really shines is in reinforcing positive thinking habits.

Per the developer, Moodnotes helps users:

● Track your mood and identify what influences it

● Develop healthier thinking habits

● Learn about “traps” in your thinking and how to avoid them

● Bring new, helpful perspectives to situations

● Increase your self-awareness

● Reduce your distress and enhance your sense of well-being

Is Moodnotes - Mood Tracker safe for my kids?

Moodnotes can be a great tool for adults using the app to track moods and develop healthier thinking habits, and may be of some assistance as a tool for those diagnosed with a mental health issue.

Moodnotes being used by children is an iffy proposition. If a child has already been diagnosed or seen by a mental health provider and the app is integrated as part of ongoing therapy, meaning it is being used as a tool under a doctor’s advice, then Moodnotes can be a great help.

However, without the guidance or help of a mental help professional, Moodnotes is not the best starting place for children suffering from anxiety and depression.

Moodnotes is a double-edged sword when it comes to mental health and digital applications. On one hand, Moodnotes may prevent some people from seeing a mental health professional who really need to.

On the other hand, Moodnotes can be a tool for those suffering from mild anxiety or depression. And while Moodnotes is not meant to supplant traditional mental health practices, the app can be a useful tool for those users with an established provider, by tracking and showing mood patterns over time.

Rather than a simple mood journal, Moodnotes poses gentle questions to users, encouraging them to explore the root causes of such feelings, as well as identify what influences different moods. In all, Moodnotes is an app designed to help users improve their thinking habits and develop the tools necessary to maintain a positive life outlook.

While Moodnotes is a great tool for users of all ages, children should be supervised in their use of the app.
