What is Exploding Kittens®?

MeetMe is a dating and chat app that matches people nearby and across the globe. MeetMe users are able to fine-tune settings to make matches based upon location, age and interests.

MeetMe is free to download and use but does feature in-app purchases and advertisements.  It is available in both the App Store and the Google Play Store and is rated for users 17 years of age and older.

Once a user downloads the app, they’re prompted to create an account, either by entering information in manually, or by using their Facebook login credentials to speed up the process.

Those users deciding to manually create an account will need to enter their name, email address, date of birth, zip code, gender, and also a password for the account.

By creating an account and agreeing to terms, parents should be aware that users consent to receive email, text, SMS and other messages from the developer, and that the developer may use a member’s email address, phone number and other personal information for commercial purposes.

Also noted in the fine print is that MeetMe reserves the right to change the terms of service at any time, that it’s the user’s responsibility to check for changes in terms of service (basically, the app isn’t responsible for notifying users of changes), and that continued use of the app will be seen as acceptance of revised terms.

Also included in the terms of service is fine print saying that those persons who accept the terms of service are avowing that they are not a registered sex offender.

While MeetMe is free to use, the app offers a variety of in-app purchases, ranging in price from $1.99 to $99.99, which are used to boost profiles, spotlight profiles, and generally make user profiles stand out from the rest, in order to make more matches and attract more people to chat with.

Parents should be aware that MeetMe is used by teens as a dating app, where they can connect with other nearby users, or users across the globe.

Parents need to know that the MeetMe app allows children ages 13 years and older to download and create an account, but requires users ages 13 to 17 years of age to have their parent or guardian sign the terms of service and privacy policy.

MeetMe matches members by interests, preferences and other filters (age, location), that allows matches to then chat via a messaging system. Parents should be aware that MeetMe allows minors to openly chat and send photos to strangers, so this is not an app for younger teens

When users log into the app, they state whether they wish to be matched to males, females or both, and then further refine results by interests such as romance, country, sports, gaming, Pokemon, as well as age and location.

While the MeetMe app allows users as young as 13 to create accounts, the App Store suggests that users be ages 17 years and older.

Common user complaints include: sketchy people, plenty of bots and spam accounts, account hacking, cyberbullying, suicide promotion and the promotion of violence against others.

Parents, MeetMe is not an app you want your young teen using, so it’s best to push for making new friends in real life.
