Math vs. Zombies, developed by TapToLearn Software, is an educational app that features 7 detailed worlds crawling with creepy zombies. Each world has 3 levels of difficulty (easy, medium, hard), and 7 math problems per level of difficulty, progressing from easiest to most difficult at the end.
These problems include the four basic mathematical categories of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. As kids progress the zombies appear, accompanied by eerie music, and present a math problem that players must answer correctly to defeat the zombie and continue to the next level.
Each new level builds upon the skills previously learned, providing motivation for kids to keep playing and practicing their math skills.

The game is meant to engage kids in math, not scare them away. Parents are often glad to see kids enjoying themselves while learning important math skills and reinforcing the education received during the school day with playtime outside of school.
This said, parents should be wary of the tendency to relegate the educational process to programmed apps alone and should take the time to explore the worlds and problems in Math vs. Zombies with their kids, helping them, challenging them, and enjoying time with them along the way.
The connection that develops between parent and child as they learn and develop important skills is one to be cherished, and while it is always helpful to have a game that helps kids in the process, the important thing is to continue to play an active role in their education.
