What is Joy Doodle: Movie Color & Draw?
Kids Doodle is a simple drawing app that allows children endless possibilities to create on mobile devices. With a wide selection of brush styles, a gallery and a movie replay option, budding artists can create unique pieces, return to add more to their existing pieces, and watch a replay of their creation process.
Kids Doodle is free to download, but does feature ads. An ad-free version of the app is available through in-app purchase.
When users open the Kids Doodle app, they’re taken to a home screen that prominently displays two main options, New and Gallery. Just below the options, to the bottom right hand corner of the screen, are two tiny circle buttons.
The thumbs up button takes users directly to the App/Google Store to review the Kids Doodle app and the “Ad Free” button allows users to make a one time in-app purchase to remove ads.
To begin creating, users tap the “New” option on the home screen, which opens to a blank canvas. The default canvas/background color is black, but can be changed by tapping the “X” in the upper right hand corner and flipping through the various color options.
At the bottom of the canvas screen are menu icons for different functions:
- The pencil icon brings up a menu of 25 brush options
- The eraser icon allows users to switch to erase mode and modify the size of the eraser they wish to use
- The arrow icon allows users to either undo/redo an action
- The play button icon replays the artwork creation in movie mode, start to finish
- The paper airplane icon opens a sub menu of sharing and saving options, allowing users to save to their creations to the device’s camera roll, save the video to the camera roll, upload photos to embellish within the app
- An option to share via a user’s established sharing options (text, email, social media, cloud photo storage, etc.).
A major downside to the Kids Doodle app is that children are unable to pick the color they wish to create with. Instead, colors are arbitrarily assigned and alternated each time a child removes their finger from the canvas and returns to start another line or portion of a design.
With a selection of 25 different brush styles to choose from, Kids Doodle functions similar to the old marker sets that came with different styled/cutout tips.
Is Joy Doodle: Movie Color & Draw safe for my kids?
Parents should know that Kids Doodle is a free art app that allows children to let their imaginations run wild by creating on a blank canvas. Rated for children ages 4 years and older, Kids Doodle is simple and safe to use, and easy enough for toddlers to navigate.
The free app, however, does feature an ad banner prominently at the top of the screen. Kids Doodle serves child-friendly ads but many users have complained that little ones frequently tap the banner by accident, taking them from the app platform to another screen on a third party site.
Kids Doodle does offer an ad-free option, for a one time in-app purchase of $0.99, which can be activated by tapping the “Ad Free” button at the bottom right hand corner of the home screen.
Parents of smaller children will want to make sure that in-app purchases are password protected, if they do not wish to purchase the ad-free version of the app, as the button is easy to activate.
At the very bottom of the screen is a row of six thumbnails, each a different app by the same developers which, when tapped, takes users directly to the App Store to download. Parents of especially young children will want to navigate through this home screen for them.
All in all, Kids Doodle is a simple drawing app that young children will have fun creating in and sharing artwork with others.
