What is Android Accessibility Suite?
Android Accessibility Suite is the rebranded version of the Google TalkBack app, which enables people to use an Android device eyes-free or with a switch device.
The Android Accessibility Suite app is free to download and use from the Google Play Store, is rated for users of all ages, and does not feature any additional in-app purchases or advertisements.
Android Accessibility Suite now includes TalkBack, in which a screen reader adds spoken, audible, and vibration feedback to a user’s device to help visually impaired users navigate their devices.
The Switch Access feature of the Android Accessibility Suite allows users to control their device with a switch, and Select to Speak to Speak lets users select something on their screen and hear it read or described aloud.
Users may access all of the Android Accessibility Suite settings under the Accessibility menu in Android Settings.
The Android Accessibility Suite works to customize a user’s device to meet their needs. By enabling the TalkBack screen reader feature on one’s device, they receive alerts and notifications through audible cues.
The Select to Speak screen feature allows users to customize the types of alerts they wish to receive spoken feedback for and the times in which they want to receive them. Users may also select items on their screen, or point the camera at something happening in the world, to hear them read or described.
Visually impaired users have options to adjust their screen size, resolution and font size within the Android Accessibility Suite’s display settings. To change the size of the items displayed on the device screen, users can adjust the display or font sizes. To temporarily zoom in on specific things on a device screen, users have the ability to use the Magnification option.
Users also have the option of changing screen colors and contrasts to custom configurations.
The Android Accessibility Suite features interaction controls, allowing users to control their device by either voice or switch.
With Voice Access, users can manage their device with spoken commands, such as opening apps, navigating through a screen, and editing text hands-free. Switch-Access allows users to interact with their screen by using one or more switches to control the device and selections.
With the Android Accessibility Suite, users can also turn on captions for the device to have closed captioning display in the language, text, and style of their choice. The Android Accessibility Suite also allows users to use to text through their device on Real-Time Text (RTT) calls.
Lastly, the Android Accessibility Suite offers a feature called BrailleBack, which works with the TalkBack feature for a combined speech and braille experience, allowing users to edit text and interact with their device.
Is Android Accessibility Suite safe for my kids?
Google’s rebranding from TalkBack to Android Accessibility Suite is likely because TalkBack is now only one of the many features of the app.
The Android Accessibility Suite is invaluable in creating a streamlined and accessible smartphone experience for impaired users and does not pose any issues for use by children. This app is safe for kids.
It is important to note, however, that the Android Accessibility Suite take up a great deal of storage space on user phones, and may limit the number of additional apps a user wishes to add to their device.
