What is Exploding Kittens?

Based upon the popular Kickstarter card game, the Exploding Kittens app allows players to get their fix virtually. Players’ phones act as their hands of cards as they play the game of chance in a private game with friends or with virtual strangers.

Exploding Kittens is available for $1.99 wherever apps are sold, does not feature any advertisements, but does feature additional in-app purchases, and is rated for players ages 9 years and older.

Those already familiar with the Exploding Kittens card game should know that the app functions much the same. A game of chance, Exploding Kittens players draw cards from a pile, hoping to avoid an exploding kitten card; players also have a hand of cards that they do not reveal to other players, unless prompted by another player playing a reveal card.

Should a player draw an exploding kitten from the deck, they must play a diffuse card within the time limit (a timer will both sound and appear on the screen, showing where to place the diffuse card and how much time is remaining to diffuse the exploding kitten).

If a diffuse card is played -- each of which are silly, as the game is meant to make players laugh -- the kitten is diffused, the player then gets to choose where in the deck of cards they wish to return the exploding kitten card, and game play continues normally (players should make note of where they place it, so that they don’t end up miscalculating and pulling the card on their next turn).

If a player does not have a diffuse card in their hand, the kitten will explode, and they are out of the game.

Is Exploding Kittens safe for my kids?

Parents should know that the Exploding Kittens app is a virtual edition of the Kickstarter card game of chance, and is fun for players of all ages. There are no actual exploding kittens, and families who play the game at home will be familiar with the card deck, as the Exploding Kittens app uses the same cards.

The App Store recommends the Exploding Kittens app for players ages 9 years and older, but children as young as 5 years of agewill be able to play and enjoy the game

While the app costs $1.99 to purchase, it does not feature any in-app advertisements. In-app purchases, ranging in price from $.99 to $1.99, come in the form of expansion packs of cards and avatars, and add a bit of variety to the game.

Parents of younger players will appreciate the fact that Exploding Kittens is a card game of chance, or Russian Roulette, meaning that all players have an equal chance of winning or pulling an exploding kitten card and being unable to diffuse the kitten.

Parents should also know that players can create private games with their friends, or can choose to play with virtual strangers, though it’s important to note that players who opt to play with strangers do not have any additional means of interacting, other than gameplay, so it’s relatively safe for young children.

All in all, the Exploding Kittens app is a fun and funny game, from the silly avatars players choose to represent themselves, to the funny diffuse cards (catnip sandwich, anyone?), and of course, lots of exploding kittens.
