What is Clips?

Clips is a photo and video editing app by Apple that allows users to create fun video clips to share on social networks.

Only available for iOS devices, the Clips app is rated for users of all ages, is free to download and does not feature any additional in-app purchases or advertisements.

Apple’s Clips app is designed to help younger Apple device users create fun and funky short clips for sharing on social media platforms. At the most basic level, Clips allows users to take photos and videos and combine them to share to their favorite social media outlets.

Users should be aware that the Clips app only creates square videos, which means that many photos video clips will be cropped when transferred to the app. However, the square aspect of the Clips app makes it an ideal video editing tool for Instagram.

The Clips app interface is actually quite simple and allows users to get right down to editing. To get started, users chose whether they wish to use photos and videos from their device’s media library or to record video directly through the Clips app.

When selecting photos to use in their clips, users will need to tap and hold the add button to the desired length of their clip, they’ll see multiples of their photo appear in the snapshot bar below the active screen.

Once users have uploaded a photo or video and selected the desired length for their custom clip, they’ll proceed to add effects from five editing options. It’s important to note that each photo and/or video is treated as an individual clip, so effects added only apply to that specific clip, not the entire video.

Live Titles is the shining star of the Clips app, allowing users to caption their videos as they create them. The Live Titles effect automatically transcribes audio into text on the screen, perfect for sharing on social media where so many people prefer to watch videos without sound.

Simply unmute the sound and select the live titles icon before recording. users also have the option of choosing the font in which their video captions appear.

Additional effects include Posters, which are pre-made text and graphic images that can be used within videos for added effect, making videos look more like they’re professionally edited.

Included in the Posters feature are licenses properties including Star Wars, Mickey Mouse and Friends, and select Pixar graphics.

Clips users can add filters to their videos, the range of which are pretty standard fare, with the exception of watercolor, charcoal, comic book, and ink, which transform videos into art canvases.

Once filters are added users can then add text graphic labels, stickers and emoji to their clips for added effect.

Lastly, the emoji available in the Clips app will be the identical to a user’s keyboard selections, as the app pulls directly from there to offer selections.
