What is BOO! - Group Text & Video Chat?
BOO! is a video chat camera app that allows users to record short messages for friends. BOO! allows users to add filters while recording, and fun stickers and text once finished, to edit a completed video. Once done, BOO! users simply send to friends in app contacts, or via text, email or social media.
BOO! is available for both iOS and Android devices and is rated for teens. This app does feature in-app purchases.
BOO! users are given 15-seconds of recording time to create a video message that can be sent out to their BOO! network, privately to a friend, or to a specific group.
What separates BOO! from similar apps is the ease of use because users can record and send videos with a single finger.
If a user wishes to send a video message directly to a friend, they navigate to their contact list, within the app, tap on the profile photo of the friend they wish to send a message to, and hold their finger down to record. Once finished, users lift their finger and the message is instantly delivered.
When creating a group or platform message, BOO! users simply tap the app to open a camera screen, tap the smiley face at the bottom of the screen to bring up a list of hundreds of filters (if they wish to use a camera filter), then tap and hold the screen to record.
When a user finished their recording, they then have the option to edit the message to be sent by adding text, drawings, stickers or GIPHYs.
Once finished editing, users can choose to save their video directly to their device’s camera roll, share to social media like Musical.ly, Snapchat, and Instagram, share via text or email, or select BOO! contacts or a group, directly in the app, and send their video chat message instantly.
Is BOO! - Group Text & Video Chat safe for my kids?
Parents should know that the BOO! app is a social networking video app that allows users to quickly and easily record video messages and send to friends. Touted as a more streamlined version of Snapchat, the BOO! app functions as both a video camera recording app, as well as a social app, where users may add other users to their friend list.
The BOO! app is free to download and use, but does feature in-app purchases, and is rated for users ages 9 years and older and is relatively safe for responsible kids.
Parents should be aware that the BOO! app has adequate privacy features. BOO! users must have another user’s screen name or scan their unique QR code to send a friend request. Once a user has sent a friend request, the receiver may accept or turn down that request, allowing users to keep their profile and videos private, and available only to a select group of friends.
BOO! will also ask for permission to access a user’s contact list to scan for friends already on the platform.
While the BOO! app is free to use, parents should be aware that the app features a variety of in-app purchases. Users may purchase addition lens or theme packages, each available for $0.99 and parents may want to discuss spending expectations prior to allowing children to download and use the BOO! app.
While the BOO! app is not likely to overtake Snapchat in popularity, it can be a fun app for those children who are still too young for the Snapchat platform, but want to play around with video camera filters and sending friends silly messages.
