What is Google Pay?

Google Pay is a digital wallet and online payment app that allows users to make payments and transfers.

The Google Pay app is available in both the App Store and the Google Play Store. There are no in-app purchases or advertisements. This app is rated for users 17 years of age and older.

Previously known as Android Pay, Google Pay acts similarly to other digital wallets like Apple Pay but is available for both iOS and Android devices.

Ideal for users who want to simplify, this app allows you to be on-the-go without your physical wallet. Users can send or request money from contacts, split the bill, make purchases and more. Google Pay will also store ticket information and allows for set-up of recurring payments.

When users first open this app they will be asked to sign in or create a GMail account. The main menu features two tabs along the bottom: your homepage displaying your contacts, transactions, and more uses of the app as well as the Payment Methods tab that allows you to see cards you’ve already entered and add additional ones.

Users should know that cards from any bank are accepted. The Google Pay app touts that it’s security is rock solid with multiple layers of encryption in order to keep you and your money safe.

Google Pay is rated well in both app store and some common user complaints mention that the app does not always work as it’s supposed to and that they have had bad interactions with customer service.

Is Google Pay safe for my kids?

Google Pay is safe for older teens with some parental supervision. Parents should know that Google Pay’s Terms of Service state the following when it comes to age restrictions; you must be:

“You are between 13 and 17 years of age and creating a Google Payments Account for the sole and limited purpose of redeeming Google Play Gift Card value for select items that are eligible for purchase by you on Google Play and YouTube, subject to applicable laws and Google's discretion” or

“You are 18 years of age or older; and Capable of entering into a legally binding agreement”.

If a users meets these terms, parents should only allow their child to use this app if they are mature enough to not abuse it. Parents should consider having a discussion with their children about proper and responsible use of this app.

Kids should never send or request money from any sort of stranger and they should be careful about agreeing to send and receive money from other users that they may know. Kids and older teens may not be responsible enough to follow through on paying someone back or they may spend irresponsibly.

Content wise, parents do not have anything to worry about with this app as it’s sole purpose is a digital wallet. There is no content or chat options outside of this but parents will want to know that any Gmail contacts will automatically be added to this app.
