What is Zello Walkie Talkie?

Zello Walkie Talkie is a free communication app that allows users to turn their phone into a Push to Talk (PTT) device.

Zello Walkie Talkie is available for download in the App Store and the Google Play Store and is rated for users 12 years of age and older. This app does not feature any in-app purchases or advertisements.

This app allows users to communicate with other devices instantly using the push to talk feature, users can interact with up to 2500 other users through public or private channels.

Zello Walkie Talkie allows kids to text, share location and send voice messages like a standard walkie talkie either privately to friends or to engage in debates in public channels. This app allows for real time voice streaming and works when the user’s device is connected to WiFi or using cellular data.

Unlike traditional walkie talkies, Zello is not limited to a two way back and forth conversation, you can connect with as many friends or colleagues as you’d like.

Many reviewers say that Zello is a good app to use for walkie talkie simulation as it provides clear and crisp audio but they note that the public forums are almost all filled with trolls who want to use foul language and say obscene things.

Is Zello Walkie Talkie safe for my kids?

Zello is safe for older, mature teens. Parents will be happy to know that Zello features no ads.

The communication between channels and with strangers is in a “party-line” system, so there really is no way to monitor what is being said or who they're talking to. Parents should know that this app allows users to join public chat groups where they are able to send photos, audio messages and share their location with large groups of strangers. This app gives users the ability to connect with up to 2500 other users both privately and publicly and allows these users to communicate with one another.

Users have to create an account with their name and email to use the app, and are encouraged to take a photo for their profile, so parents may want to review their photo beforehand.

Issues with this app can be reported to the developer by emailing support@zello.com. Zello is similar to other apps that enable smartphones and tablets with PTT technology like iPTT and Voxer.

Parents should be cautious when allowing teens to use this app, making sure to go over whether or not they should be interacting with public groups and unknown members of these groups. There are ways for users to create secure channels where you must be invited in order to access that particular channel, which is a good way to monitor which aspects of this app kids can use.
