What is SoundCloud - Music & Songs?

The SoundCloud app is the mobile version of the popular social music streaming site, filled with user-generated music files, and great for budding musicians to share audio creations and build followings.

This app can be found in both the App Store and the Google Play Store and is rated for teen users. The SoundCloud app features both in-app  purchases and advertisements.

An excellent platform for up and coming artists, SoundCloud allows users to upload audio files to the platform for other users to stream.

While SoundCloud users can stream user-generated content including everything from talk shows to budding musicians, millions of licensed audio tracks and popular music is available as well. A popular SoundCloud feature is the ability for users to create their own playlists, based upon personal preferences and favorite artists.

SoundCloud has a feature called The Upload, which functions similar to other music streaming service’s algorithms. Users receive streaming suggestions daily, from new music added, based upon prior listening preferences in the app and the more a user streams, the better The Upload is able to make recommendations.

To use the SoundCloud app, users must sign up for an account, which can be done with Facebook, Google or other email. It is important to note that SoundCloud audio files can be shared to popular social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter.

Is SoundCloud - Music & Songs safe for my kids?

Parents should know that SoundCloud is a social music streaming site, pegged as the “YouTube for audio” because of the immense amount of user-generated music and spoken word tracks that can be found on the platform. Because of the possibility of encountering inappropriate and mature content, SoundCloud is rated for teen users, ages 13 years and older. It's best suited for mature teens only.

Geared toward a more mature audience, parents should know that SoundCloud does not feature content or profanity filters, and children can easily be exposed to mature or inappropriate content. However, SoundCloud users have the ability to flag content in violation of the site’s terms, and such content will be removed

In-app purchases come by way of subscription in SoundCloud, and it can be a little confusing. For those users who wish to simply stream and sample audio, SoundCloud offers a free version, with over 120 million tracks and genre-oriented stations. For $5.99 per month, SoundCloud users can subscribe to Go, which offers access to additional tracks, removes ad-play from the app, and allows users to play audio files offline.

For $12.99 per month, users can subscribe to Go+, which includes an expanded catalogue with more popular musicians and artists, ad-free listening, the ability to listen offline, as well as removing 30-second streaming for users to sample files and Go+ members are able to access full-length audio files

Parents should be aware that users are able to comment on audio tracks in the SoundCloud app, and comments are not filtered, so children may be exposed to inappropriate language and mature subjects. Again, those comments found to violate SoundCloud’s community guidelines can be flagged by other users, and will be removed. However, vulgar or lewd comments remain visibile for all users to read until they are flagged and reported.

Equally important is the fact that SoundCloud users are able to comment on publicly shared audio files, so parents of young musicians and artists may wish to shield their children from the possibility of receiving inappropriate or trolling comments on their audio tracks.
