What is Smashy Road?

Smashy Road is a driving game app featuring Atari-like graphics as players attempt to outmaneuver police.

Smashy Road is rated for players of all ages and is free to download and play; however, Smashy Road does feature in-app advertisements and purchases.

Parents will recognize the Atari-like bit graphics of the Smashy Road app, with a game screen that looks eerily like Frogger from the 1980s. However, instead of playing as a frog attempting to avoid vehicles as it crosses the road, players drive a car and dodge obstacles as they weave in and out of traffic in an attempt to evade police.

In addition to simple graphics, Smashy Road includes simple controls with players merely swiping from side to side to maneuver their car through traffic and around obstacles.

To speed up gameplay and make the road more difficult to maneuver, players can swipe up to speed up their car and race through traffic, darting left and right with swipes of the finger.

While the Smashy Road app is free to download and play, players are given a small bank of coins to play with. Each game “costs” one coin to play.

Coins can be earned through gameplay, with drivers collecting them as they run over them on the highway. Coins may also be acquired through watching video advertisements throughout Smashy Road gameplay.

However, the game puts a cap of 200 coins on the number of coins players may earn through watching video advertisements. Both static and video advertisements are shown periodically after rounds of gameplay, most of which are for other gaming apps of interest to younger players.

In-app purchases come in the form of vehicles, which players may add to their arsenal of available cars to drive. Players can choose from different styles of trucks, a tank, and a bulldozer. Additional vehicles cost $0.99 each to add to players’ available fleet.

Is Smashy Road safe for my kids?

Where parents may have a concern is with the premise of the game which is to race a car along a busy highway in an attempt to evade police. Players are given a bit of a head start but will soon hear a police siren, signaling the cruiser in pursuit. Even players having a good run will find the police car on their tail.

Parents should know that Smashy Road does feature car crashes and fire, but the pixelated nature of the game makes it look entirely unrealistic.

Inexplicably, Smashy Road throws waddling ducks into the roadway to keep players on their toes and create additional obstacles while drivers navigate their cars through traffic. Parents need not worry about graphic violence, there is no bloodshed when a duck is hit, players just lose a turn.

In short, the Smashy Road app does not pose much of a concern for parents. Parents should be sure to discuss spending expectations before allowing their child to play or disable purchases altogether.  This app is safe for kids.
