What is Expeditions?
Google Expeditions is a free teaching and exploration app that takes users on virtual reality (VR) tours or lets them interact with augmented reality (AR) objects. Available for free in the Google Play Store and the App Store and is rated for everyone.
The Google Expeditions app is designed for educational scenarios. Teachers act as Guides to VR tours of everything from historical landmarks to underwater reefs to towering mountains, all packed with information and facts about certain features of the destination.
When the Guide sets up a tour, students, known as Explorers, who will need a VR headset, will be connected automatically to that tour, as the app recognizes users on the same Wi-Fi connection and brings them into the tour.
Users can also explore any of the destinations alone, without a guide.
The AR feature of the app does not require a VR headset, and it allows students to explore different objects, their features, and information about them.
With Google as the developer, users can be ensured the app meets a high standard of quality, but kinks are still being worked out. Reviewers praise the excellent clarity of the images and loads of accompanying information, but there are some complaints of crashes that must still be dealt with by Google.
Google Expeditions is a great way for classrooms to explore and learn about distant destinations from the comfort of the classroom.
Is Expeditions safe for my kids?
Google Expeditions is safe for kids, so long as they old enough to use VR headsets.
The AR function does not require a headset, and thus it is safe for all ages.
The use of VR headsets can cause disorientation and damage to the eyesight of younger children, and most manufacturers recommend that kids 13 and under should not use them.
The benefits of Google Expeditions are many. Kids have the chance expand their knowledge of world history and nature while virtually visiting destinations they may otherwise not have the opportunity to see.
This opportunity sparks curiosity and interests that a textbook simply cannot offer. It brings education to life. Explorers could journey into the ocean to learn about reefs and all the species that make up that environment, which is far more immersive and engaging to young, curious minds than the flat pages and distant pictures of a textbook about marine life.
Google Expeditions is safe place for teachers to augment the curriculum with enchanting virtual tours of the different subjects they are teaching, giving life and excitement to the educational process that can often be a drag for students.
