What is Clash Royale?

Clash Royale is the follow-up app to Supercell’s Clash of the Clans. Part role playing game (or RPG) and part virtual card game, where players compete against an opposing “clan” to overtake two towers and a base via lane-based combat.

Game moves and defenses are made by “playing” strategy cards within each player’s virtual deck, so the effect is a fast-paced war full of moves and counter-moves, made by scrolling through virtual card decks and selecting cards to play.

Beginning players will find a challenge in learning what strategy each card employs. At most basic, Clash Royale is akin to watching a virtual chess match, in which players use strategy against their opponents to overtake two towers and a base.

In Clash Royale, game cards represent strategy, which dictate game moves or plays once employed against an opponent. Players can wage an initial strike with their cards, or wait for their opponent to make the first move, then respond with a card that will strategically take out or weaken the opposing player’s strike.

As players continue to play, they are “dealt” cards at time intervals, with a deck showing the next card to be dealt to a player’s virtual hand (ostensibly helping with advance strategy).

The arena in Clash Royale looks like a checkerboard, with lanes running down either side of the screen. Game moves are employed down either the left or right hand side (or both), with attacks working their way down the lane toward their opponent.

Once a tower is taken out, attacks continue on the lane toward the base, and the king, which is the ultimate target to take out. As players advance through opponents, they earn trophies based upon their game play, which accrue to provide both a player rank and help when matching opposing players.

Is Clash Royale safe for my kids?

Clash Royale is free to download and is rated for players aged 10 and older. Clash Royale is a virtual war game that depicts some cartoon violence between opposing clans, attempting to destroy one another.

While free to download, parents should know that Clash Royale is ad-free, but in order for users to effectively (and triumphantly) play, they must shell out money to add higher ranking cards to their decks, via in-app purchases.

In fact, many players report high levels of frustration in game play, as attempting to play for free will not get them very far in the game.

Parents should know that Clash Royale is a live, real-time game, in which online players are matched with others logged into the app. Players are able to message or chat with each other throughout the game, which can, and often does feature profanity.

Some parents have reported seeing players share personal information about themselves through the messaging feature, so this is something to be aware of; it’s important to note that the chat feature cannot be turned off.

In-app purchases are made for coins, the game’s currency, which can in turn be cashed in for higher ranking or more powerful playing cards. Again, it’s difficult for players to advance far without purchasing these higher ranking cards, so parents should be sure to set spending expectations prior to game play.
